Here in the UK we have to pay a licence to own a TV. That's right - if you own a TV you have to have pay a licence fee - it's required by law.The license funds the BBC - hence no advertising on the BBC. A colour TV Licence costs #126.50 and a black and white licence costs #42.00. And it has to be renewed every year.
Watching TV without a licence is a criminal offence!
Using a TV or any other device to receive or record TV programmes (for example, a VCR, set-top box, DVD recorder or PC with a broadcast card) without a valid TV Licence is against the law and could lead to prosecution and a fine of up to #1,000.
But today The Guardian reports that it's not just the fee-dodgers who need to worry - many innocent people are being unfairly hounded as well.
