Re: TV licence - Will the telly police be coming for you next?
Here in the UK we have to pay a licence to own a TV. That's right - if you own a TV you have to have pay a licence fee - it's required by law.The license funds the BBC - hence no advertising on the BBC. A colour TV Licence costs #126.50 and a black and white licence costs #42.00. And it has to be renewed every year.

Watching TV without a licence is a criminal offence!

Using a TV or any other device to receive or record TV programmes (for example, a VCR, set-top box, DVD recorder or PC with a broadcast card) without a valid TV Licence is against the law and could lead to prosecution and a fine of up to #1,000.

But today The Guardian reports that it's not just the fee-dodgers who need to worry - many innocent people are being unfairly hounded as well.

A Doctor's Message from Katrina's Front Lines
I've read a great number of heart-rending stories that are being told about the Hurricane Katrina victims. Here's one that I feel must be shared:

Barbara Bush & her infamous remarks about hurricane refugees
While touring the Houston Astrodome, Barbara Bush, the president's mom, actually said "this is working very well for them." She was referring to the thousands of Hurricane Katrina refugees. Charming! Can you imagine? The president of the United States has a mom that says that?

John Kass of the Chicago Tribune has written a very amusing article about the incident, Mother's remark puts silver foot in Bush's mouth.
